UNDERSTANDING THE MCP

At iRISE Elevators, we believe that information comes before service. Our goal is to help you understand the MCP, as well as the difference between GOOD and BAD elevator maintenance.

Above all, we know that this page has info that will help you make better elevator maintenance decisions. This is also our way to inform our customers of the NEED-TO-KNOW message that will keep you and your tenants safe.

THE (MCP) MAINTENANCE CONTROL PLAN

MCP Logbook

WHAT IS THE MCP?

First, what you should know is that the MCP is the elevator code that was adopted by the Government. It also requires thorough maintenance and record-keeping for your elevators. Additionally, the MCP logbook must be kept on-site to inform the customer that their elevator contractor is doing the work properly. Lastly, all elevating devices in Alberta are required to have an MCP as of September 1st, 2018.

WHY IS THE MCP IMPORTANT?

In a nutshell, the MCP logbook informs the customer if their elevators have been properly maintained. The info logged in the MCP by your contractor details if the testing has been fully completed. It also keeps a log of all the repairs that were conducted on your elevating devices throughout the year. Additionally, it shows the government inspectors if the elevators comply with the code. Finally, it helps confirm that all your lifts are safe for public use.

Do not be fooled by big corporate presentations. They are only viable if they are backed by a 100% completed MCP logbook. If not, then your elevator is not safe, period.

IS MY ELEVATOR SAFE?

Unless you have an elevator certification, the chances are that you don’t have the experience to fully understand the MCP. The good news is that we are helping property managers better understand their logbooks.

Our goal is to assist property managers to become more familiar with the process used to identify poor maintenance. Afterward, they can take a proactive approach to rectify the issue. We have provided pointers below on how to ensure your elevators are safe for public use.

FOLLOW UP ON ELEVATOR SAFETY

Maybe you suspect that your elevator maintenance is not up to code? Many property managers have lost trust in their service providers but are not sure what to do? No sweat. iRISE Elevators is here to help you out.

First, you want to know the frequency of maintenance visits in your service contract. The visits by your service provider should match or exceed the visits detailed in your contract. You should see your technicians at least four times per year. If not, this would be considered as a lack of maintenance.

Secondly, locate your MCP logbook in the elevator machine room. Only authorized personnel should access this area of your building. Your MCP should have your technician’s initials for every time that they have visited your site and completed work. If your logbook has less than four entries per year, this would indicate a lack of maintenance. Another red flag is if your CAT1 and CAT5 testing are not fully signed off within the specified deadline. This would also confirm that your elevator is not code compliant.

Finally, it is important to understand that some tests should be signed off while others are not required. Now it is getting more technical. If your logbooks don’t look right, it is time to reach out for assistance.

CATEGORY 5 TESTING

The MCP program includes the testing known as “Category 5 Testing”. We also call it “CAT5” for short, and we perform it once every 5 years on elevating devices.

Firstly, it is important to know that these are aggressive tests that are performed at the rated load and speed of your elevator. Secondly, note that this is a government code requirement. This is how we evaluate the safety and integrity of your elevators. CAT5 testing is to be completed every 5 years. Property managers should have this testing completed within the specified deadline.

We are happy to help with any CAT5 services or inquiries. Contact us if you have any further questions.
